![]() The Aimpoint CompM5s shares many of the same features and specifications as the original CompM5 model, but it has a low battery compartment, so it’s less obtrusive to your view and physically smaller. It was introduced in 2019 as a new edition to their professional-grade red dots dubbed the Aimpoint Comp series. The CompM5s is the latest in their lineup of full-sized, duty-ready red dots. With heavier bullets, everything else I mentioned is still valid.Aimpoint created the first modern red dot in 1975, and since then, they have been a dominant force in the market. 35 anything with pistol bullets is a hoot, but perhaps not a deer eliminator at subsonic speeds. 30-06, I didn't mention other cartridges. But I also believe that RedDot is fluffy enough that the primer blast stirs it up like a leaf blower no matter where it lies in the case - it's remarkably consistent in my own guns.Īs the original post referred only to the. Velocity can indeed vary a lot with powder orientation, with some powders more than others. ![]() In straight cases, even they aren't bad, but in bottlenecked cases, I fear they can cake or get pressed into a solid plug at ignition. And then that barrel is toast - or worse.Ī tiny tuft of Dacron may not be so bad, but when I use the term "filler" I refer to the cereal products or synthetic powders designed for shotshell use. It may not happen right away, and it may not happen for a long time, but the chances are, it WILL happen. The reason for my proscription against fillers in bottleneck cases is precisely the chamber ringing issue. In the future I will start higher and stop when I hit subsonic. I think it was a bit under 800fps with a 75gr Amax. 223 and it eventually ate enough of the jacket to get it out but it was quite a bit of work. I have only used the LBT solids on a couple of hogs and have seen penetration exceeding 50" (forehead and out the booty) so Im sure I can sacrafice some penetration for some expansion in the first foot or so.Īnd for those that stick a jacketed bullet have fun. I recall originally hearing it in a Ross Seyfried artical several years ago and he cited it as being somewhat of a cast nosler partition.Īfter posting the above I found a link on the site about hollow point cast bullets and the premise was the same, the front expanding or shedding on light resistance and the remaining shank punching through. I keep trying to get to the range to kill some wet newspaper but keep forgetting to the cast rounds. I often wondered if the softened lead would expand on game. I believe it will and let us know how it goes! They zing right through a deer.Įnough of being negative! I hope Trail Boss works for you folks. pistol bullet (with a larger frontal area) will not expand on soft tissue at that speed and hardness. IME, lead alloy needs to be pure lead to expand below 900 fps., and don't forget that is what speed it requires when the bullet hits, not downrange when velocity drops even more. Other fillers have a tendancy to ignite, cake, harden or melt. I have had success by making the filler part of the bullet, not two separate pieces separated by empty space. I read a fella state that the powder "burned up" the small tuft of Dacron, but when I fire my loads with Dacron "filling" the empty space I can literally re-use it, as it is not consumed! It even weighs the same. Use a "filler" to fill, with slow pistol/fast rifle powders or use the H4895 formula with filler from powder to bullet base. Its like smacking a bullet into another bullet to make everything move. ![]() This is, what I feel, the cause of ringed chambers (or worse). ![]() You are basically firing a "bullet" into an obstruction, no matter how soft or innocent that bullet is. I too am curious as to Rocky's reply, but I myself will not use any small "tuft" of filler with fast pistol powders. 270 out the bedroom window in the middle of the night is not appreciated by the rest of the family. 22 for shooting coyotes close to the house. I dont have or need a suppressor but I wanted something a little heavier than a. So far with 5gr of bullseyeI have not seen any signs of excessive pressure, case heads are good, primer pockets have lasted 8-10 loads. 35 has a small enough shoulder to matter, velocity is extremely erratic without a little tuft of Dacron. Why no fillers on the bottleneck, to much pressure on the shoulders? I admit Im following the load info I received from another site. Http:/ / articles/ paco/ small_charges.htm I got the load from a cowboy site, think its associated with John Taffin, and they refer to them as "silent" loads. They also indicate that a hardness of 11-12 will provide expansion at 900fps. Per the Beartooth bullet guide as long as you do not get into the driving bands your ok and will not have any leading problems. Yep I was going to use the torch/water method to soften the nose. ![]()
